Integrating Smart Devices with the Google Assistant
“Home Automation is taking off in popularity. Now smart home devices can be controlled with conversational voice commands providing unparalleled convenience. Smart displays, apps, and any device with a personal assistant can also be used for smart home control. The Google Assistant has become a common thread that enables smart devices to work seamlessly together.
This talk describes how to integrate your own home automation hardware or appliances with the Google Assistant. This will allow you to leverage the assistant’s built-in natural language understanding to process queries and commands for the devices in the home as well as provide an integrated experience with the whole Google ecosystem.
The foundation for this is the Smart Home API, part of the Actions on Google platform. It governs how developers describe the devices and their capabilities to Google using a schema of types and traits. We will explain Google’s Home Automation architecture, including HomeGraph and device integration. At the conclusion of this talk, developers will understand the fundamentals for integrating their HW device in the Google Assistant ecosystem.
