War Stories in Building and Launching Google Nest’s Newest Optimized Camera Experience

Google recently launched an overhauled camera experience to wide acclaim. [see https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/google-unveils-redesign-and-major-updates-coming-to-google-home-app/] The team had to overcome a number of challenges both due to the high performance bar and the need to satisfy users of the legacy Nest App. This talk will discuss the challenges faced and the ways they were overcome, including the development and release strategies employed. The optimizations spanned the entire stack, encompassing camera hardware, cloud infrastructure, and iOS and Android apps. Overall, this presentation highlights the importance of user experience and the strategies for successfully launching a new product that meets the needs and performance requirements of a diverse user base.
